In this morning's early hours I listened for the first time to
a Britten song cycle which included the strange lament 'Messalina'. Googling this evening, found 'Messalina's Monkey' by Grace - which led me - inadvertently - to this - which I hadn't realised was a short story at first(but thought an article describing a recent encounter she'd had!) I was totally captivated by her fascinating, detailed description of the beautiful, ancient man - and stayed reading... ! Wonderfully rich, compelling and evocative!

Great to know that writing of such colour, allure and decadence is being created in the present day - lush and disturbing escapism, with its own flavour.
